This nine-week class offers the perfect atmosphere for self-exploration and artistic camaraderie. Students with skills in their chosen medium have the opportunity to learn from each other’s methods, practice new techniques, and paint in a positive and supportive group setting. Each class begins with a critique reviewing the previous week’s work facilitated by Kate. Carefully designed still lifes are provided and students may take advantage of studio time to work on projects of their choice.

Come learn the techniques for creating a wide array of color and tonal value with just 5 tubes of oil paint. Instruction with oil paint will focus on skill-building in the use of value and color with the goal that each student applies these skills to the painting style of their choisce. Those with experience and confidence in any painting medicum - oil, acrylic, watercolor etc. - may join the class to take advantage of weekly critueques in addition to utilising the still lifes that will be set up for each session.
Art and Science meet in this 8 week course of wildlife portraiture through the art of scratchboard. In this class, students will create three original scratchboard artworks of animal subjects while learning more about their anatomy. Previous drawing experience is recommended.
Spring means lots of beautiful new foliage and blooms! Learn to stylistically draw them in this demo-based course. We will begin by rendering plants in simple linework, and gradually add color throughout the course. Demos focus on where to begin with botanical subjects, how to plan out a drawing, where to make creative decisions so that the drawing looks like you want it to look. A great class to take if you’ve always wanted to draw botanical subjects but didn't know where to start. No prior drawing experience is required!

In this 8 weeks workshop we will be transforming a sketchbook or journal into a personalized art journal. Each week will have a different project to create a unique artwork while we explore many types of media like acrylics, tempera, colored pencils, collage, markers, stencils, watercolor, pen and many more. No experience needed.
Get ready to either develop or hone your skills in watercolor painting. Beginners will enjoy taking it one step at a time in this introductory eight-week course. Class demonstrations and individual instruction will provide beginners as well as intermediate participants with a fundamental understanding of the watercolor application. This includes learning about basic materials, familiarizing yourself with tools, utilizing basic watercolor techniques, and identifying various ways to blend colors. Each week you will practice small painting exercises and complete several works by the end of the class. Come practice in a relaxed environment where there is no wrong way to learn this magnificent medium.
This studio class is your chance to explore a variety of painting materials you have heard about but have yet to try! Each week there will be guided demonstration by the instructor on a variety of painting media- everything from india ink, to watercolor pan and tubes, to acrylic paint. Partcipants will focus on individual experimentation and an open mindset to trying out new materials. Bring your wildest ideas and your spirit of play! No experience necessary.
Offered as a second class in our artist services series, this class helps you learn to photograph your artwork and build a basic website for showcasing your art. Students will emerge from this class with a live website. including Home, About and Image Gallery pages. No prior experience with photography or coding experience is needed to learn to create and build your very own web presence. All levels are welcome whether you are a hobbyist to emerging artist, or seasoned practicing artist. We can support and learn from one another's creative and entrepreneurial goals.

Try your hand at clay! Beginners and those interested in refreshing their skills are welcome in this class as we learn about the materials, methods, simple tricks, tips, and rules involved in hand-building ceramic items. Learn how to make a layered tile, then move up to three dimensions with a vase or cup. The instructor will guide you through hand-building methods such as coils, pinch pots, log rolls, soft slabs, hard slabs, stamps, and sprigs. We will also learn various glaze techniques like staining, sgraffito, resist, inlay, stencils, and more. As you work on projects of your own choosing, you will have the instructor there to help you consider the best design and construction methods.
Join our wheel throwing class! Whether you are new to wheel throwing or you have taken a wheel throwing class before, join us to build your skills. This class will cover the basics of throwing including wedging, centering, and creating simple forms on the wheel. Classes will begin with an instructor demonstration and move into hands-on activities to help you learn the basics of throwing and preparing your work to be fired. Students will leave this 8 week course with at least 3 finished forms to take home. All levels welcome.

In these individually scheduled, one-on-one courses, an instructor will guide you through the basics of manual camera function and shooting on black & white 35mm film. This flexible and customizable course is designed for beginners with no previous experience in a black & white darkroom. In this individually scheduled, one-on-one course, an instructor will guide you through the basics of darkroom photography processes, adjusting the curriculum to focus on your goals within the medium. Topics covered include processing black & white film, contact printing, and enlargement printing in a black & white darkroom. Please note: This course does not include instructions on camera function & shooting. An additional lesson can be scheduled for those enrolled who require such instruction.

This one-day session is designed for those who have had some previous experience in black & white photography, processing, or printing but have been away from it for some time. We will go through the process of black & white film processing and darkroom printing together as a refresher to these hands-on procedures. Participants must bring an exposed roll of film to work with for this class.

In this two-day workshop, Jordan K. Walker will explore with you the basic principles of landscape painting, including composition, value, depth, and color. This class will also touch on essential techniques of oil painting, such as paint application, edge control, and color mixing. Day 1 will be spent in the classroom at the Maude Kerns Art Center painting in monochrome from photo reference and covering the fundamentals. Day 2 will paint directly from life at the Meadowlark Prairies West Eugene and learn to record some of the subtleties of nature while altering what we see to create compelling images. All levels of experience are welcome. Nature is full of awe-inspiring environments and there are few experiences more exciting than capturing a sense of these places through paint!
Learn how to paint with pastels in brilliant color! Channing will share how he creates color vibration in his pastel paintings. The class will start with a painting demonstration. You will learn how to work with your photos to create a strong composition, define your values, create an underpainting, identify a light source, create a point of focus, and how to see and use color and paper effectively to create a mood for your painting. There will be personalized teaching and individualized feedback throughout the day.
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that uses the sun to produce a cyan blueprint. The process is simple but incredibly diverse, lending itself easily to experimentation. In this one-day workshop, learn both the fundamentals of the process and experimental techniques, producing the following works in cyanotype: photograms using natural objects, photographs using digital negatives, and toned & manipulated prints. No previous experience is required, and all materials for this workshop are provided! Participants will be asked to email the images they wish to print in class ahead of time.
Lumen prints are photograms made with the sun. This is a camera-less photography process that combines photographic paper and chemistry traditionally used in a darkroom setting with light and subject matter found outside. The results yielded from this open and experimental process are surprising and dynamic. In this workshop we’ll introduce this alternative analog process, experiment with a variety of materials, and briefly cover DIY digital methods of presentation and archiving. No previous experience is required and all materials are included.
Capture the hilly streets, storefronts, and urban sky line of Eugene in this plein air class. Learn to create a convincing sense of space, light and time of day while depicting streetscapes, trees, and sky. Color mixing and pastel techniques will be demonstrated, but all drawing/painting media are welcome. Located just 15 minutes around Maude Kerns Art Center, the surroundings offer engaging urban and Hendrick's park neighborhood subjects. Saturday we will meet at Maude Kerns and Sunday's location will be announced at the end of that class session. Note: Students are responsible for their own transportation to the plein air locations. Bring a lunch and water bottle. All levels welcome!

Come celebrate Womens History month with through a family art experience. Work with the colors, techniques and ideas inspired by creative women! Our instructor will guide you through painting, drawing and collage activities. We will be exploring works by assemblage artist and scultpor, Lilian Blades, inspired by her childhood in the Bahamas and her mother's seamstress creations. And abstract painter who drew inspiration from nature, Helen Frankenthaler.
MKAC has a parking lot for art students, visitors, and staff. If you happen to arrive for your class and the parking lot is full, please come into the office and grab a parking pass. This will override the street parking time limits for your class time!
In the event of bad weather, the Art Center will close if Lane Community College is closed. Classes for that day will be cancelled and a make-up session will be held at a later date. In the event that Lane Community College is delayed, all Art Center classes before 12pm will be cancelled. Call 541-345-1571 after 12pm on the day in question to check for afternoon and evening classes.
Full refunds or credits will be offered if cancellation is made 10 business days or more prior to the start date of the class, workshop, or camp. If a cancellation request is made within 6-10 business days prior to class, workshop, or camp the student will receive a 50% refund or credit, and all fees associated with the class will be forfeited. No refund or credits will be given for cancellation requests made 5 business days or less prior to class, workshop, or camp. There are no refunds after the first session of the class, workshop, or camp.
