2010 Fall Classes

2010 Fall Classes are here and registration has begun! See below for new class dates. To Register call the Art Center at 345-1571 or e-mail sabrina@mkartcenter.org.

Fall Adult classes begin the week of September 20th and include Painting & Drawing classes, Ceramic classes, Fall Workshops and Open Studios.


Classes for Youth and Young Adult Classes begin the week of October 4th. And, the Art Center also has a Private Lesson Program for youth and young adults.


Personalized Gift Certificates are available for art classes, Art Center membership, or you can customize your own gift. Call the Art Center at 345-1571 to order your personalized Gift Certificate.


You can register for classes in person with cash, check, or credit card, or by mail with check or credit card. To register for classes at the Maude Kerns Art Center, please call 345-1571. Scholarships are available based on financial eligibility. For more information contact the Art Center.

Beginning Watercolors

Discover what you can do with watercolors in our beginning watercolor class! Working with this expressive medium, you will learn about color mixing and composition as you create watercolor sketches and finished paintings. In a fun and relaxed classroom setting, your instructor will guide you through the painting process. You will paint from photos, sketches, and still lifes as you learn the fundamentals of watercolors, experiment with techniques, and explore all of the painting possibilities!

Figure Painting

Taking a step by step approach, you will learn the fundamentals of figure painting and discover how to create a three-dimensional form on your canvas. You will learn how to “draw” with your paint to create the shapes of the figure and how to contour the figure to create light and dark values in your painting. You will review concepts of shape and mass as you discover how to capture the gesture of the figure. With group discussions and individual instruction, you will develop your painting skills and explore new techniques for figure painting.

Studio Painting
Kate Bollons

This critique-based class is designed for intermediate to advanced painters with an adventurous spirit, a love of mark making, and a willingness to share their art with others. Working from carefully constructed still lifes, the stage is set for you to develop your painting skills. Working from a model for two sessions, you will also have the opportunity to practice figure painting. Each week, instructor Kate Bollons begins class with a critique to discuss your art and learn from your fellow students. A great class to explore a variety of styles as you discover your creative process.

Oil Painting Fundamentals

Designed to put you on the path for success, this class takes you step by step through the oil painting process. You will learn to choose your paintbrushes, mix colors, and to create a composition. With the guidance and encouragement of instructor Kate Bollons, you will explore ideas of tone and value and learn why with just three colors the world of painting can be yours. You will also complete a variety of exercises designed to develop your drawing and painting skills. This class is sure to kick start your creativity and begin your painting journey.

Basic Drawing

In this basic drawing class, you will take a step by step approach to drawing. With the help of your instructor Erika Beyer, you will develop your skills of observation and learn how to describe three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface. You will discuss the concepts of line, composition, value, and perspective as you complete exercises designed to strengthen your drawing skills and techniques. In a fun and encouraging classroom setting, you will also learn about different drawing materials and benefit from both group and individual instruction. Fall Workshops

Creating Manga & Anime Characters with Copic Markers

Do you love drawing your own manga and animé characters? Then this is the workshop for you! Accomplished manga artist Marianne Walker will share her expertise and show you how to create and develop your own characters. You will learn the correct proportions to use when drawing a manga or animé figure and you will review how to draw your character’s features including the head, eyes, and hands.

Working with Copic Markers, Marianne will demonstrate how to use this medium and add color to your characters. You will learn how to mix and blend colors to create different values adding shadows and highlights to your work. Perfect for aspiring animators of all ages!

Create Handmade Cards - Watercolors & Mixed Media

Wheel Throwing

Explore your creative side as you make mugs, vases, bowls, and more in the Art Center’s professional ceramics studio. In this class, you will review the fundamentals of using the potter’s wheel and explore a variety of techniques to embellish your pottery such as carving, stamping, and painting with glazes. Your instructor will guide you through the glazing process and you will add vibrant colors to your finished pieces. With a small class size and lots of individual instruction, this class is perfect for students of all skill sets to practice new techniques. Adults and Young Adults (13 and over) are welcome.

Discover Drawing & Painting

From drawing games to easel painting, there is always something new to discover in this art class! Become an “art pro” as you practice your painting skills and discover new ways to draw. You will learn all about realistic and abstract art, color coding and mixing, and why shading and details are important to your art. With your teacher you will talk about different artistic styles and explore the Art Center’s gallery to see what artists, past and present, create. On the last day of class, you will showcase your masterpieces for family and friends in your very own Art Exhibit!

Learning to See Like an Artist

To be a great artist you need to see like an artist. In this class, you will learn how to train your “artistic eye” and how to turn your drawings into paintings. You will explore drawing techniques with charcoal and pencil to create sketches that you can then turn into paintings. Using acrylic paints, you will learn how to mix colors, create different shades of color, and how to add highlights to your paintings. This class is perfect for young artists looking to develop their skills and take their artwork to the next level. On the last day of class, family and friends are invited to see your masterpieces in your Art Exhibit!

Clayin' and Playin'

In our popular clay class you will make all kinds of clay creations including a 3-D landscape for your favorite animal, a bird feeder, and even a mask made out of clay! With the help of your teacher, Laura, you mold your masterpieces into amazing clay sculptures and learn how to add textures to your clay. You will also add color to your clay using glazes. On the last day of class, wow your family and friends with your clay creations in your class Art Exhibit!

Looking at work of current artists, you will create drawings and paintings using popular design elements found in contemporary art, street art, and architecture. You will experiment with a variety of materials including pencil, pen, marker, charcoal, watercolors, and acrylic paints as you explore concepts of line, shape, and perspective. Private Art Lessons
Do you have a budding artist? It may be time for private art lessons at the Art Center!

Private Lessons are available for Youth (ages 6-12) and Young Adults (ages 10-16). Lessons will include (4) one-hour sessions with an Art Center Instructor. Weekly meetings. Lessons are available in a variety of drawing and painting mediums and are customized to fit each student's creative interests and schedule. To arrange private lessons for your young artist, please contact Sabrina at 345-1571 or sabrina@mkartcenter.org
