Classes
for Youth and Young
Adult Classes begin the
week of January 11th. And, the Art Center also has
a Private
Lesson Program for youth
and young adults.
Personalized Gift Certificates
are available for art classes, Art Center membership,
or you can customize your own gift. Call the Art Center
at 345-1571 to order your personalized Gift Certificate.
You
can register for classes in person with cash, check,
or credit card, or by mail with check or credit card.
To register for classes at the Maude Kerns Art Center,
please call 345-1571. Scholarships are available based
on financial eligibility. For more information contact
the Art Center.
Winter Weather Advisory:
In the event of inclement weather, the Art Center
will close if Lane Community College (LCC) is closed.
Classes for that day will be cancelled and a make-up
session will be held at a later date. If LCC classes
are delayed, all Art Center clases that take place
before noon that day will be cancelled. If morning
classes are cancelled, please call the Center after
12:00 pm the day in question for information about
afternoon and evening classes.

This drawing and painting class introduces beginning and
intermediate artists to fundamental skills and techniques.
You will focus on how to successfully incorporate architectural
images and landscape elements into your artwork. During the
first four class sessions, you will experiment with a variety
of drawing materials and complete exercises to develop your
understanding of perspective. In the last four class
sessions, instructor Ellen Gabehart will demonstrate step-by-step
how to paint architectural images as she works in both watercolors
and acrylic paints.

Develop your painting style in
a fun and creative environment. Designed for intermediate
to advanced painters, this class provides individual
instruction and group discussion to help you explore
techniques and spark your creativity. Focusing on concepts
of color, composition, and light, you will work from
short and long-term still lifes as well as a model who
will pose for two class sessions. You will also benefit
from in-depth analysis of a variety of artists ranging
from Klee, Morandi, and Rothko to such favorites as
Monet and Cézanne.

Study abstract painting with instructor Jerry Ross and learn
why Diego Rivera said “every good composition is above all a
work of abstraction.” Each week create an abstract painting as
you develop your expression of color, form, and line. You will
learn to critique abstract paintings based on concept, illusion,
artistic poetry, and overall effect. You will also review the
history of abstraction, learning about fauvism, cubism, surrealism,
and minimalism. Instruction will be in oils, but students are invited
to use the medium of their choice.

of the creative process. In this workshop, you will
complete exercises to encourage the use of images and
words to express feelings, emotions, and stories. And

Encaustic:
Painting & Collage

In this three-week workshop, you will explore the ancient
medium of encaustic and create modern artworks of your
own. Dating back to the ancient Egyptians, the process
of encaustic painting uses heated beeswax which is applied
to a prepared surface. During your first class meeting,
you will review the history of encaustic and discuss
how artists such as Andrea Montegna, Diego Rivera, and
Jasper Johns have incorporated this medium into their
work. Artist Sarah Grew will also demonstrate the process
of mixing encaustic paint. You will learn how to use
encaustic paint, how to create a photo transfer on your
work, and also experiment with adding texture to the
wax medium with found objects. This is a great class
for students new to encaustic and for those looking
to refresh their skills and learn new techniques. Sign

Sculpture & Ceramics Class

Laura Jackson

Create wheel-thrown pottery in the Art Center’s professional
ceramics studio! With the guidance of instructor Laura
Jackson, you will learn the fundamentals of working
with clay and using the potter’s wheel. You will practice
your skills as you learn to form cylinders to make your
own mugs, vases, candleholders, and bowls. Using a variety
of tools, you may also experiment by adding texture
and surface designs to your pieces. Once your pieces
are completed, you will learn how to add color using
a wide variety of glazes. With a small class size and
lots of individual instruction, this class is great
for beginning and intermediate potters to develop their
skills and learn new techniques. Adults and Young Adults
(13 and over) welcome.

Movie Making Spring Break Art Camp
Ages 6-12

It's the only place in town for a week of movie-making,
art-creating fun! Spend mornings drawing and painting
as you learn techniques to create characters and design
sets. In the afternoons, take on roles of set designer,
camera person, and director as you work with your "movie
crew" to create a stop-motion animation movie.
Friday at 4pm, preview your movie at your "Movie
Premiere" for family and friends!
All art materials and 2 daily snacks
are provided. Campers do need to bring a lunch.

Learning to See Like an Artist

of drawing and painting mediums and are customized to
fit each student's creative interests and schedule.
