2008 Summer Classes
& Summer Camps

2008 Summer Classes are here! This summer, Adult classes include "Basic Drawing," "Plein Air Painting," and Ceramics classes. We will continue to offer our Tuesday Open Studio session as well as a Wednesday evening Open Studio Drawing and a Monday evening Open Studio Figure Sculpture.

We also have Summer Art Camps for Youth, Summer Workshops for Young Adults!

Gift Certificates are available and are perfect for any special occassion, such as Mother's or Father's Day! Call the Art Center to order your personalized Gift Certificate.

Adult classes include Painting & Drawing classes, including our Sculpture & Ceramic classes, Workshops and Open Studios.

You can register for classes in person with cash, check, or credit card, or by mail with check or credit card. To register for classes at the Maude Kerns Art Center, please call 345-1571. Scholarships are available based on financial eligibility. Nobody will be turned away due to inability to pay before the start date of the class. For more information contact the Art Center.

Winter Weather Advisory: In the event of bad weather, the Art Center will close if Lane Community College is closed. Classes for that day will be cancelled and a make-up session will be held at a later date. In the event that Lane Community College is delayed, all Art Center classes before 12:00pm will be cancelled. Please call 345-1571 after 12:00pm on the day in question for information about afternoon and evening classes.

Basic Drawing with John Holdway

This summer, embark on a journey of drawing discovery! In this Basic Drawing class, you will learn and review drawing skills in a series of lessons and exercises designed to introduce you to the concepts of line, shading, perspective, composition, and more. Each week, you will build upon the techniques you’ve learned to create sketches and finished drawings that will help to strengthen your skills. As you gain confidence, you will explore your own artistic style and advance your abilities. 8 Sessions.

Plein Aire Painting with Jerry Ross

Enjoy summer evenings as you and your fellow artists travel to a variety of picturesque settings where you will learn and practice plein air painting skills under the guidance of Art Instructor Jerry Ross. You will learn what materials and media work best for plein air painting, how to adjust to your outdoor environment, and how to feel comfortable in your setting. You will discover how to turn a simple sketch into a finished painting. Your evening painting destinations will include the University of Oregon campus, Skinner’s Butte, Amazon Park, and the LCC campus. Your first class session will be held at the Art Center, and materials will be discussed during this time.

Watercolors: Seascapes, Landscapes, & More

Escape to a picturesque destination in your own watercolor paintings! From start to finish, this class gives you the tools for painting success. Designed for all skill levels, this class allows you to explore the creative process in a fun and encouraging environment. Experiment with painting from photographs as you begin, develop, and finish watercolor paintings. You will also review concepts of color, composition, and the idea of using a limited palette as you find your own artistic voice. 8 Sessions.

Painting Workshop

Painting with Sarkis

Join us for this very special painting workshop with accomplished artist, longtime Art Center supporter, and Open Studio participant, Sarkis Antikajian.

Recognized for his expressive painting style and masterful use of color, Sarkis believes that “A picture is better than 1,000 words.” In keeping with this painting philosophy, Sarkis’s five-day workshop will teach you how to complete a painting from beginning to end. You will explore a variety of subjects including figures, landscapes, and still lifes as you experiment with paint application, composition, and color.

Over the course of this workshop, Sarkis will customize a curriculum to suit the skills and interests of you and your fellow students. He will guide you through the process of painting and offer his assistance and inspiration.

Sarkis will begin each day with a painting demonstration in which he will complete a painting from start to finish, enabling you to observe his techniques and ask questions. You will then begin work on your painting, putting into practice the skills and techniques Sarkis has demonstrated. Individual and group critiques will also help to strengthen your paintings. Students will have a lunch break on each day. $100 Deposit is required at the time of registration.

Sarkis's Painting Workshop Registration/Cancellation Policy: Spaces are reserved on a first deposit basis. Payment in full must be received 14 days prior to the start of the workshop or students may lose their space unless other arrangements have been made. There is a $50 non-refundable cancellation charge. No refund will be made within 10 days of the workshop unless a replacement student is found. No refunds once the workshop has begun. In the event the Art Center must cancel the workshop, a full refund will be made.

Wheel Throwing - Registration Extended!

Cover the basics of creating wheel-thrown pottery in this introductory ceramics class. From preparing clay for use, to centering pots on the wheel, to glazing finished pieces, your instructor will guide you step- by-step through each process. Have fun as you explore a variety of surfacing techniques and experiment with wheel throwing in a professional ceramics studio. A perfect class for beginners and intermediate ceramic artists. Summer Art Camps for Youth

Drawing & Painting Like a Pro

Put your drawing and painting skills into practice! You will become an “Art Pro” as you explore techniques such as color mixing, line drawing, still life drawing, and basic painting. Multimedia Art Week
