& Spring Break Art Camp

2012 Spring Classes for youth, young adults and adults are here!

Spring Adult classes begin the week of April 2nd and include Painting & Drawing classes, Ceramic classes, Winter Workshop and Open Studios.


Spend your Spring Break creating art! The Art Center will be offering a full-day Spring Break Art Camp for ages 6-12 and a half-day Spring Break Workshop
for ages 10-16. For young artists, we have Youth Classes for youth ages 6-12 and Young Adult Classes for ages 10-16 which begin the week of April 9th. The Art Center also offers Private Lessons for youth and young adults. Call today to reserve your space!


You can register for classes in person with cash, check, or credit card, or by mail with check or credit card. To register for classes at the Maude Kerns Art Center, please call 345-1571. Scholarships are available based on financial eligibility. For more information contact the Art Center.

Winter Weather Advisory
In the event of bad weather, the Art Center will close if Lane Community (LCC) is closed. Classes for that day will be cancelled and a make-up session will be held at a later date. In the event LCC is delayed, all Art Center classes before 12pm will be cancelled. Please call after 12pm on the day in question for more information about afternoon and evening classes.

Personalized Gift Certificates are available for art classes, Art Center membership, or you can customize your own gift. Call the Art Center at 345-1571 to order your personalized Gift Certificate.

Basic Drawing

Find your inner artist this Spring! In our popular Basic Drawing class, instructor Brandi York will introduce you to the basic principles of drawing. With a step-by-step approach, you will complete drawing exercises designed to get you to start thinking and seeing like an artist. Each week, you will develop your skills of perception and experiment with a variety of drawing materials. You will also begin to build your artistic vocabulary as you discuss the ideas of line, shape, value, and form. This is the perfect class to kick start your creativity and introduce you to the art of drawing.

Working with Watercolors

In this four-week watercolor painting class, beginning and intermediate students will have the opportunity to work on projects of their choice in a fun and relaxed classroom setting. Instructor Erika Beyer will lend her expertise as she guides you through the painting process and offers her advice. You will experiment with a variety of watercolor techniques, practice mixing colors, and learn the process of watercolor painting, from stretching your paper to putting final touches on your work. Learning to See Color: Color Studies in Oil Paint

Rediscover color in this oil painting class. With instructor Farley Craig, you will focus on capturing “true color.” During the first four class sessions, you will work from still lifes as you explore color relationships, discover how color is affected by light, and learn to recognize the “local color” of an object. In the last four classes, you will work from a model and practice incorporating color into the figure. You will learn how to layer colors to acheive depth and discuss how color affects the tone of a painting. Whether you are a beginning or advanced painter, this class will strengthen your understanding of color and challenge your creativity.

Drawing in Color: An Introduction to Pastels

Painting Still Lifes

Movie Making Spring Break Art Camp

Are you ready for a week of movie making and art creation? In this camp, you will spend your mornings drawing and painting as you learn all about different types of art and create your own artist portfolio. In the afternoons, you will transform into a set designer, camera person, and director as you work with your "movie crew" to create a stop-motion animation movie short. Friday at 4pm, you will preview your movie and art with family and friends in the "Spring Break Movie Premiere & Art Exhibit." All materials and two daily snacks are provided. Campers do need to bring a lunch each day.

Cartooning & Comic Illustration Workshop

This Sping Break, learn the fundamentals for cartooning and create your own comic strip or book! From developing your storyline to drawing your characters, this workshop covers it all. With your teacher, you will go through the cartooning process step-by-step from first sketches to the final inking of your comic strip or book. You will learn how to make an exciting “splash page” (first page of a comic) and work on creating your own font to match your story. On Friday you will share your comic creations with family and friends at your class Art Exhibit.

Private Art Lessons
Do you have a budding artist? It may be time for private art lessons at the Art Center!

Private Lessons are available for Youth (ages 6-12) and Young Adults (ages 10-16). Lessons will include (4) one-hour sessions with an Art Center Instructor. Weekly meetings. Lessons are available in a variety of drawing and painting mediums and are customized to fit each student's creative interests and schedule. To arrange private lessons for your young artist, please contact Sabrina at 345-1571 or sabrina@mkartcenter.org
