Adult classes include Painting & Drawing classes, Ceramic classes, Plein Air Painting Workshops and Open Studios.

Summer Art Camps for Youth and Young Adult Summer Workshops begin the week of July 13th. And, the Art Center is pleased to announce it's new Private Lesson Program.

Basic Drawing

Embark on a journey of drawing discovery! In this Basic Drawing class, you will learn drawing skills and techniques designed to introduce you to the concepts of line, shading, perspective, and composition. Each week, you will build on what you’ve learned to complete exercises, sketches, and projects to help strengthen your skills and work towards creating finished drawings. With practice, patience, and a positive attitude, your efforts will be rewarded as you watch your drawings improve from week to week! 8 Sessions.

Oil Painting: Still Lifes & Figures

Working from still lifes and live models, you will benefit from step-by-step demonstrations and individual instruction. The Art Center is pleased to present this special summer painting class with accomplished artist, longtime Art Center supporter, and Open Studio participant, Steve Cooley. During this four-week class, you will explore the creative process and observe how Steve approaches his own paintings. You will learn techniques to begin a painting and review concepts of composition, line, value, and the relationships between color and shape. 4 Sessions.

Encaustic & Found Objects

Using the ancient technique of encaustic painting, create modern artwork. Dating back to 100-300 A.D., encaustic painting was used by the Egyptians to create portraits. The process of encaustic painting uses heated beeswax to apply to a prepared surface. In her own work, Sarah Grew states that her artistic process is “layered.” She creates layers of found objects, layers of color, and layers of wax. In this three-week class, you will have the opportunity to learn the history of this ancient method and explore the technique for yourself. 3 Sessions

Plein Air Painting with Jerry Ross

Join Art Center instructor Jerry Ross as he leads this new, plein air painting workshop at the “Angel Flight Artists’ Retreat” along the McKenzie River in picturesque Leaburg, Oregon. Designed for students of all skill levels, this class covers plein air painting principles, including how to paint from nature with minimal drawing and how to use a simplified palette. Focusing on “color pool” mixing and choosing a composition, you will also learn to create a “representational” painting that reflects your creative style. Instruction will be in oils, but students are invited to use the medium of their choice. Students will need to bring their own plein air easels and painting kits. (Materials list available from the Art Center.)

Plein Air Painting Workshops

In this four-day workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of plein air painting and explore how to choose a composition, control values in your painting, and capture the texture of the outdoors in your art. Each day, you will meet at a new location and paint on-site at Island Park, the Eugene Rose Garden, Alton Baker Park, and at the 5th Street Public Market. Working in the painting medium of your choice, you will receive one-on-one instruction and benefit from instructor demonstrations. A great way to improve your paintings and enjoy the summer!

Learn wheel throwing in the Art Center’s professional ceramics studio! Perfect for beginning or intermediate potters, this class covers the basics of wheel throwing from forming cylinders to decorating finished pieces. Join us for the Art Center’s new ceramics class! Designed for all skill levels, this class teaches the fundamentals of handbuilding with clay. With the help of instructor Laura Jackson, you will create a variety of beautiful objects, including lidded boxes, a sushi set, tea cups, and wall sconces (for floral arrangements). Experiment with decorating the surface of your pieces and glazing your finished artworks. Adults &Young Adults (13 and over) welcome. 8 Sessions.
